Narrative Leadership & Organizational Storytelling
stop explaining the plan.
start narrating reality.
| Making strategy, change, and brand stories succeed in resonance with the undercurrent
SURFING THE UNDERCURRENT
Beneath every successful strategy, transformation, or rebranding flows the exact same source: the inherent drive and pride of the people who have to make it happen. When you deeply understand that undercurrent—and align your plan, your leadership communication, and everything around it accordingly—a vision on paper turns into an unstoppable movement across the organization.
An organization is a living, socio-biological network of people. Within that tribe with laptops lives a deeply rooted Cultural Sense of Identity: a shared sense of who we are, where our historical pride lies, and what constitutes our unique craftsmanship.
The adoption and integration of a new strategy ultimately come down to one question: does this direction fit the story the undercurrent lives and tells about itself? When a new strategic course or brand story aligns seamlessly with the sense of identity on the shop floor, this identity resonance creates a mission-driven culture with maximum execution power.
This is Organizational Storytelling. Not using a story as gift-wrapping on the outside—but placing it at the very heart of the mission, as a fundamental organizing force.
BLIND SPOT BETWEEN THINKING AND DOING
Why even rock-solid plans often stall after launch
When a new direction fails to gain immediate traction on the shop floor, the executive team is quick to point to "resistance to change." But with a sound plan, resistance to change doesn't actually exist. What looks like human resistance is actually technical adoption friction.
That friction almost always originates on the fault line between the strategic thinking behind the plan and the professional doing in daily practice:
Communication as an afterthought: Months are spent engineering the substance, the strategy, and the plan. Only right before go-live is the story folded around it like gift-wrapping.
The explanation reflex on stage: Strategists have been immersed in the content for months. They try to convince people rationally using the spreadsheets and arguments that convinced them in the boardroom—or they wrap tough choices in soothing PR gloss (the sugarcoating trap).
When a plan fails to resonate with the cultural sense of identity on the shop floor, the culture’s immune system rejects it. During the transitional phase (the liminal phase), this triggers massive execution drag (system leakage): up to 50% of your execution power evaporates into noise, cynicism, and middle managers caught between the boardroom and the shop floor.
WHEN TO WORK WITH ME?
Four challenges where I sit at
the table
The remedy for adoption friction is not pushing harder on the org chart, but deeply understanding the undercurrent upfront. Stopping the reflex to explain the plan, and instead start narrating the changing reality.
1. Strong adoption and traction for a transformation or new strategy
You have a new strategic plan, a reorganization, or a new way of working on the table. The substance is solid, but the return on investment ultimately depends on adoption on the shop floor. I help align the story and the rollout with the undercurrent —eliminating adoption friction and putting the full energy of your organization behind the execution.
2. Anchoring a rebranding or new brand story in your culture
You have developed a sharp new positioning or brand promise. But a brand only becomes credible when it is lived from the inside out. I help translate it into the heads, hearts, and daily craftsmanship of your people — so your culture actually becomes what your brand promises.
3. Consistent, high-impact leadership communication at every level
A transformation never succeeds through a single great town hall. Employees look to their direct managers and peers to figure out what a new direction really means. I train and guide executive teams (C-suite/MT), BU leads, and middle management in Narrative Leadership — enabling your entire leadership line to narrate the changing reality as one consistent front.
4. The voice of the undercurrent measurably on your table within 72 hours (CVA)
As an executive, you rarely get the unfiltered truth on the shop floor, and a traditional engagement survey only delivers backward-looking scores. With the AI-driven Culture Voice Assessment (CVA), I bring your entire organization virtually to your desk within a matter of days. You get a hard, data-driven diagnosis of their language, pride, and friction points — while harvesting the collective intelligence of the floor on how to make the plan succeed in practice.
About Ruben Blom & the method
15 years at the intersection of strategic thinking and professional doing
The first 15 years of my career served as the laboratory in which Narrative Leadership was forged. While working as a strategic copywriter translating boardroom strategies into communication concepts (the Thinking), I simultaneously coached thousands of leaders and professionals in stage presence, public speaking, and leadership communication (the Doing).
At that exact intersection, I saw that the transfer from boardroom to shop floor is an anthropological process — and that virtually no practical model existed to truly bridge that gap. Today, I close that divide by connecting strategic advisory, undercurrent data, and leadership training in three steps: The Resonance Cycle.
01. PULSE
Pinpoint the Truth
Measuring instead of guessing. With the hybrid (both qualitative and quantitative) Culture Voice Assessment, we uncover the Cultural Sense of Identity, the language, and the latent adoption friction across two anonymous rounds -quantified into hard impact scores. In doing so, we already build pre-adoption in the diagnostic phase by harvesting the wisdom of the shop floor on the How.
02. DESIGN
Build the Strategy
Against the Story
We design the strategic narrative in Identity Resonance with the undercurrent, serving as the conceptual platform for your transformation plan and rollout. Rather than settling for a watered-down compromise to convince 100% of the crowd, we aim squarely at the 8% Focal Point of cultural early adopters who organically tip the conversation at the coffee machine.
03. RESONANCE
Systemic Execution & de Story Box
We activate the Leadership Communication System. I train executive teams, MTs, and team leads to powerfully narrate the changing reality. Simultaneously, we orchestrate all 6 dimensions of your Story Box so that daily operational practice continuously confirms the story.
TRACK RECORD
From paper plan
to real momentum
Organizations and leadership teams I’ve worked with:
HOSPITALITY & ENTERTAINMENT (3,000+ EMPLOYEES)The challenge: Due to historical friction, a tough financial and operational transition threatened to land on the shop floor as a cold cost-cutting exercise—risking cynicism and a loss of execution power.
The breakthrough: By placing the deep cultural sense of identity and professional pride on the floor at the center, we developed a powerful 6-Step Executive Storyline with all leaders. Painful interventions were not smoothed over with PR gloss (the sugarcoating trap), but narrated honestly, as an offensive mission: becoming masters of our craft again!
INTERNATIONAL TECH & SAAS CORPORATE (2,000+ EMPLOYEES)The challenge: During a major restructuring and strategic pivot toward new market models, middle management got caught between strict boardroom targets and uncertainty on the shop floor.
The breakthrough: We developed a central narrative that served as the blueprint to orchestrate the Story Box. Internal communications, events, the HR journey, and leadership rituals were aligned to embed the new narrative into the organization’s DNA. This simplified adoption: it was no longer just "something management came up with."
NICHE STRATEGY & CONSULTANCY FIRM (50+ EMPLOYEES)The challenge: A razor-sharp new brand positioning had been developed for the outside world, but internally people wondered: is this really who we are? There was a high risk of a weak brand culture.
The breakthrough: Instead of rolling out a top-down internal campaign, we mapped the language and pride of the undercurrent. By aligning the new positioning with that reality, the culture recognized its own story. Through targeted sessions, employees were deeply involved in shaping and expressing the new vision in daily practice, while being sharply trained to integrate the new narrative into their communication.

Method Lab: about strategy, culture, and the undercurrent
In the Method Lab and the accompanying Narrative Leadership Lexicon, I share the insights, models, and real-world stories behind successful strategy adoption and cultural transformation. No non-committal theory, but thought-provoking tools for the intersection between the boardroom and the shop floor.

cul·tur·al sense of i·den·ti·ty (noun; from the Narrative Leadership Lexicon) The deeply rooted, collective self-image in the undercurrent: who we are, where our historical pride lies, and what constitutes our unique craftsmanship. It acts as the organization’s immune system—any strategic plan that clashes with it is rejected, whereas a direction in identity resonance finds immediate adoption and traction.
